Earth Day underwater cleanup

Volunteers from Tacoma's dive community have joined hands to improve the environment during Earth Day. The cleanup will be held at Point Defiance Boathouse in Tacoma. 810 lbs of trash was removed from the area's waterways during last year's cleanup. This cleanup is an ongoing effort to protect marine life and preserve our environment. Scuba diving is an enjoyable hobby that can be promoted and shared with others.

The organizers are hoping to get kayakers as well as scuba divers working together to clean up the Tacoma waterfront. After the net has been removed, divers will transport it from the water with a boat lift. Wounded Warriors can help participants remove large quantities of trash and other debris. The organizers believe the cleanup will protect our waters and offer a unique experience.

Rockfish survey

Scuba divers can save endangered rockfish species by taking part in a Tacoma SCUBA rockfish survey. This dive is part a citizen science collaboration between Harbor WildWatch and the NOAA. Survey participation is open to all divers. The dive brief is where the training takes place. Night diving is permitted for those who are certified.

In 1998, WDFW launched a multiyear mark recapture study in Westport, Washington. This monitoring system, which includes five annual releases for black rockfish, is part of a sport fishery tag recovery monitoring system. These fish were released onto pinnacles in the Westport charter-fishing fleet area. The survey involves the placement of two coded wire tags within the opercular musculature of these fish to determine individual identification after recapture.

Easy exit with only a few pounds trash

You can go scuba diving near Commencement Bay if you are looking for a spot in the Greater Tacoma area. This Earth Day, 47 pounds of trash was collected by volunteers from the water by scuba divers. Octopuses, fishing wire, and glass bottles were all part of the garbage. The Marine Science and Technology Center, part of Highline Community College, organized the clean-up. The waters around Des Moines were cleaned up by the MaST in a previous cleanup.

Observation and treatment of wounded bull sea Lion

Tacoma's dive group witnessed an amazing sight while scubadiving. The sight of a bull sealion injured by an arrow stunned divers. The animal sustained a shark bite wound and was blind. Bjorn was then taken to the Marine Mammal Care Center Los Angeles, where rescuers helped him gain weight. Bjorn is the name of the sea lion, named after a character from "Vikings". This mighty animal, which is nearly 400 lbs in weight, now resides at the Tacoma Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.

In October, a Tacoma diving group saw this amazing sight. It was the first time that the group had ever seen a sea lion on a dive, and they were so excited about it that they gathered in groups with other scuba divers to watch the creatures in action. Observations of the sea lions reveal their playful nature. Sea lion puppies tend to be in groups of the same age as their parents and will play with divers in shallow water. The pups like to play with divers as well, jumping into the sea to give them toys or interact with bubble streams.
