Earth Day underwater cleanup

Volunteers are coming together from the Tacoma dive community to support the environment this Earth Day. The cleanup will be held at Point Defiance Boathouse in Tacoma. The cleanup took out 810 pounds last year. This cleanup is part of an ongoing effort to conserve marine life as well as preserve the environment. You can promote your business by getting involved and meet others who enjoy scuba diving.

Organizers are planning to have scuba divers and kayakers work together to remove discarded fishing gear from the Tacoma waterfront. Divers will lift the net out of the water using a boat elevator once it is removed. Wounded Warriors will also be available to help with large amounts of trash and other waste. The organizers hope the cleanup will preserve our waterways and offer a unique experience for the local community.

Rockfish survey

Scuba divers can participate in a Tacoma SCUBA-based rockfish survey to help save endangered species. This dive is part the Harbor WildWatch citizen science partnership with the NOAA. Participation in the survey is open to all divers, with no experience required. The training takes place during the dive brief. The participant must be certified to take part in night diving.

In 1998, WDFW initiated a multi-year mark capture study near Westport (Washington). The study includes a tag-recovery monitoring system for sport fishing that allows five annual releases of black rocksfish. These fish were released at pinnacles within the Westport charter fishing fleet. This survey involves placing two wire tags coded within the opercular muscle of these fish in order to identify individual captures.

You can get rid of a lot of trash in one go

Commencement Bay is a good place to go diving in the greater Tacoma Area. Earth Day volunteers collected 47 pounds worth of trash from the waters. Octopuses, fishing lines, and glass bottles were among the garbage. The clean-up was organized by the Marine Science and Technology Center (MaST), part of Highline Community College. A previous MaST cleanup removed hundreds of pounds of trash from the waters around Des Moines.

Observation and treatment of wounded bull sea Lion

A dive group from Tacoma, Washington, had the privilege of witnessing an incredible sight while scuba diving. Scuba divers were stunned to see a bull sea lion wounded by an arrow. The animal sustained a shark bite wound and was blind. Bjorn was then taken to the Marine Mammal Care Center Los Angeles, where rescuers helped him gain weight. Bjorn, the sea lion's name is after a character on "Vikings", is now his new name. This mighty creature weighs nearly 400 pounds and is now residing at the Tacoma Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.

A Tacoma scuba diving group was fortunate to witness this dramatic sight in October. It was their first encounter with a sealion during a dive. They were so excited to be able to share the experience with other scuba divers. Observations show the playful nature of the sea lions. Sea lion puppies tend to be in groups of the same age as their parents and will play with divers in shallow water. The pups also like to play with the divers, jumping into the water to give them toys and interacting with bubble streams.
