Pros and cons of Backplate and Wing

house of scuba

A scuba harness has two separate components: the backplate and the wing. Both pieces are attached to a buoyancy compensator that establishes neutral buoyancy underwater and positive buoyancy on the surface. Backplate, wing, and the rest of the system are modular. Each piece can be removed from the others. They can be a great choice for divers who don't know which type to choose. These are the pros & cons of each.

Stainless steel

With or without a helmet, the stainless steel backplate and wings can be made from either stainless steel. Backplate and wings made from 316 stainless-steel are highly resistant to saltwater. It is cut by a CNC router and polished manually to prevent any sharp edges from causing premature wear. They can also be used in conjunction with single-air-tank or dual air-tank systems. To make storage easier, you can take off the wings and backplate made of stainless steel.

Stainless steel backplates are heavier than aluminium. Stainless steel backupplates are perfect for colder environments, as they'll help reduce the weight of your diving gear. Stainless Steel backplates are much easier to fit than lead pieces. A Halcyon Dealer can offer weighting advice to help determine what size is best for you. This backplate is also more durable, so it doesn't require as frequent replacement.

Plastic

While the buoyancy from the plastic backplate or wing can be a problem, it can still make it easier to replace the weight belt. Jacket BCDs also have features such as pockets and weight integration. The wing and backplate do not have these ancillary functions. These components can also be bought separately. We will be discussing the pros and cons for each. Choosing the right type of back plate for your needs is essential.

Softpack harness

There are many types of harnesses available for wings and back plates. Backplates and wing-specific BCDs are the most popular. They include all of the essential components, such as a harness, backplate, and wing, and allow the user to customize the harness with a range of adjustable features. Softpack BCDs can be used by technical divers because they are lightweight and flexible, and don't attach to any rigid plates.

Steel backplate harnesses lack adaptability. The harness is not intended to be used with single tanks. Although the steel harness is the strongest option, it is cumbersome to use while traveling. It is not suitable for single tanks and the steel backplate might be too heavy to use on the ground. You can attach adapters to make it compatible with single tanks. However, this is not recommended.
