The backplate and wing are two separable components of a scuba harness. Each piece is attached to a buoyancy compensator, which establishes positive buoyancy on the surface and neutral buoyancy underwater. The wing and backplate are modular systems that can be disassembled from each other. These systems are an excellent choice for divers who aren’t sure what type to buy. Listed below are pros and cons of each.
Stainless steel
The stainless steel wings and backplate can be ordered with or without a harness. For the wings and backplate, 316 stainless-steel will be used. It is extremely saltwater resistant. The backplate is cut with a CNC cutter and polished manually in order to prevent sharp edges from prematurely wearing the strap. They can also be used with a single-air-tank system or dual-air-tank systems. You can remove the stainless steel wings and backplate for easy storage.

Backplates made from stainless steel are much heavier than those made of aluminium. Stainless steel backplates are great for colder climates, where they'll reduce the weight you'll carry during your dive. Stainless Steel backplates are much easier to fit than lead pieces. A Halcyon Dealer may be able to give weighting advice so you can determine the best weight for your body. You don't have as many to replace the backplate.
Plastic
Although the plastic back plate/wing buoyancy is not ideal, it can still be useful for replacing weight on the weight belt. Jacket BCDs can also include weight integration and pockets. These features are not present in the backplate or wings system. These components can be ordered separately. We will be discussing the pros and cons for each. Choosing the right type of back plate for your needs is essential.
Softpack harness
There are many different types of wings and back plate harnesses. Backplates, wing BCDs, and the most common are both available. They contain all the essential components like a harness, backplate and wing. The user can customize the harness by adding a variety of adjustable features. Softpack BCDs, which are lightweight and flexible, are great for technical divers.

The problem with steel backplate harnesses, however, is their inability to be adjusted. The harness is not intended to be used with single tanks. While the steel harness offers the most rigid option, it can be cumbersome when used for travel. In addition, it is only suitable for double tanks, and the steel backplate may be unsuitable for use on land. Although it can be used with single tanks by attaching adapters this is not recommended.
